Seamus Ryan Biography
Seamus Ryan's photography reflects his strong passion for people and the portrait genre.
His studio has become home to a unique series of projects, the well documented Sunday Shoots being the foremost, involving members of the public and people from all walks of life. On selected Sundays hundreds of people happily participate in these free shoots, which aim to explore the many possibilities of portraiture. Described as a form of ‘photo theatre’ Sunday Shoots are a celebration of the craft of photography and the diversity of all people. Seamus' easy Irish charm and his strong lighting skills calms even the most nervous subject, with results that capture a person with both warmth and integrity. It has been said of Seamus that he is 'the people's photographer', a rapidly developing reputation that is both well-deserved and hard won.
During the week Seamus concentrates on both advertising and editorial work, covering all aspects of modern portraiture. His strong people skills ensure a steady flow of celebrity portrait commissions as well as bold character work and theatre posters. He has worked on countless national and international advertising campaigns over a twenty year career, from marketing titans such as Nike through to specialised financial co-operatives that focus on their customers as their key selling point. Seamus’ commissions come from a wide variety of national and international clients, advertising agencies and institutions: JWT, Publicis, BBH, McCann, Saatchi & Saatchi, WCRS, DLKW Lowe, Libertine, TBWA, Grey, The National Theatre, Derren Brown, Yahoo, RNIB, Spitfire Ale, Sky, Oxfam, Bloomberg, Guinness, Yellow Pages, British Airways and the BBC.
In 2007 Seamus Ryan created Boothnation, a bespoke photo booth company designed to incorporate his signature beauty lighting and the very latest in technology and innovation. Boothnation photo booths have become a must-have at celebrity parties, awards nights, product launches and high profile weddings. Permanent booths in Topshop’s Oxford Street store, Rough Trade East and a number of West End nightclubs are a testament to the enduring appeal of the humble photo booth not to mention Seamus’ lighting prowess.
Seamus has also launched and established Popupshoots, a photographic enterprise that brings live photo-shoots to events and retail promotions. Recent clients include Louis Vuitton, Uniqlo, All Saints and the BAFTAs.
He has been awarded by The Association of Photographers and D&AD for his work and has work included in the National Portrait Gallery's permanent collection.
